Internship
Objectives
The Internship course at S6teen Technologies/S16 Web & Graphic Designing School is designed to give the degree, certificate or advanced student hands-on experience in a professional work site to help prepare for the transition from Classroom to working environment. Those qualified students will be "matched" to a company who needs assistance and who is willing to supply a "mentor" (Professional art director, marketing director, designer, production mgr.) who works on-site to guide interns as they apply their skills on agreed upon projects. Student Qualifications & Credit: To qualify, students must have out of the heart interest in the areas like Graphic Design and Photography, multimedia, Film, Video and/or Journalism. Students may qualify upon application and an interview at S16.
Work-site Qualifications and Objectives
The work-site should provide the interns with learning experiences which they cannot get in the classroom. Businesses will have the chance to interview the student to judge what applicable skills they might have which will assist the company. If a student seems qualified, an agreement is signed which outlines projects and schedule. The goal from the beginning should be that the "work" will not be "go-for" in nature and that the student's best interests will be considered in whatever arrangement is made. The "job" can involve the intern assisting on specific projects applying the skills they learned in class to real time projects on site, to experiencing an entire operation by "shadowing" various key figures and participating in meetings and production sessions. If needed, the S16 Instructor/Coordinator is available to assist in developing "job plans" by sending a list of some appropriate projects which have proved successful with other companies, or by discussing any ideas the company might have. Remember that this internship is a learning experience, and that the student should be given the opportunity to meet the principles of the business, observe planning and client meetings and go to production shoots and proof checks, even if it doesn't specifically apply to the project the intern is working on at the time.
Procedure
The company fills out an application form and sends it to the Instructor/ Coordinator. If there are some questions, a site visit and meeting can take place. It is important that the company have an idea of the types of projects they can involve the interns in and that a mentor on site is identified. |

Here are common tips for a successful Internship/ Inplant Training:
- Have a clear understanding of what is expected of you. An internship for academic credit should have specific learning objectives. You are not there to make coffee - you are there to learn and develop professional expertise. A written work plan is often helpful.
- In a credit-based internship at least 50% of your time should be spent in learning and shadowing a professional in the organization.
- Keep track of your time. It's important to understand the value of your time and effort. The relationship between work, time, and pay is rarely understood by students. A record of your time will help you think about how long it takes to develop a project as well as the value of your efforts.
- Be attentive. Listen, ask questions, be engaged in your internship. If you slack off in your classes you'll soon learn you can't do the same during an internship. An internship is a place to develop your communication and interpersonal skills.
- You are working in an adult environment. Strive to achieve work habits that employers seek. Learn how to work with others.
- Respond to requests for input. Sometimes an internship will offer you the opportunity to contribute to the design and development of a project. Give careful attention to the request and place your best ideas on the table when asked.
Some very basic things to keep in mind but are often overlooked by student interns:
- Be on time.
- Dress appropriately for the work setup
- Don't complain about others - avoid the human habit of gossiping.
- Thank your boss when appropriate for his/her guidance and assistance. You are taking a boss' time and if he/she is willing to help you, be appreciative of the effort.
- Take advantage of an internship experience to learn as much as possible about how an organization functions. Try to understand the culture in which you are interning.
